Here is a general checklist of types of key words to look for when researching headlines. If you need more ideas, try your own searches on eBay. Pay attention to what you are thinking about when you type in a key word. Most often what we type and what we think about are very different. it is important to chose keywords that other people may type, not necessarily ones that will make sense to you.

  • Manufacturer
  • Color
  • What the item is
  • Material(s) of item
  • How new
  • How old
  • How used
  • In the box
  • In shrink wrap
  • Country manufactured in

If you are not sure about the key words you have chosen, or would like to make sure you did not miss any, try asking a friend what the first words are that come to mind when they think of your item. Once you've figured out the keywords to search by, and begun to generate your own list move on to researching the sales copy on the auction.

The sales copy in the auction page are the words that appear in the description area of the auction. This includes the headline in the description area (different from the headline of auction) and all the words that talks about the item – what it is, its benefits, it features and anything else the member believes will be helpful to sell the item. (Some members can get very creative and personable in the writing of their descriptions.)

Key word spamming is putting words (often brands other than what you are selling) in your item title that is not part of the item you are listing. This manipulates the search engine because it pulls items with those key words. Key word spamming is a listing violation meaning it is not a good idea.
