You must stay on top of your inventory, your deadlines, your database, your questions, your mailing and so much more. Don't Sell Ads On Your Website!

Want to make a great profit from your web traffic? DON'T SELL ADVERTISING ON YOUR WEBSITE! Sounds ridiculous, right? Wrong. Think about what advertisements on your website actually do. When you sell a banner ad or text link on your site you are sending traffic away from your page to somebody else's page where they could potentially purchase someone else's product. You are basically using your website, that you pay for to help someone else build their business and pad their pockets. You should be using that valuable space to promote your business and pad your own pockets.

Let me give you an example. On one of my own websites I run a 468x60 banner ad at the top of the page. If I sold it to someone else I could probably get between $300-$500 per month depending on traffic. (High traffic sites could get more, but for the sake of argument let's work with $500.) If I sold that banner to someone else for one year I would pocket $6000. Not bad, but not great either. Here's what I do instead.

I run a banner for a multi-level marketing company that sells Travel Club Memberships. For each membership I sell, I receive $1000. If I average just 1 sale per month I would make $12,000 a year as opposed to $6000 selling the space to someone else. I have just doubled my money. However, on my website and with my particular program I average about 3 sales per month which equals $3000 per month or $36,000 per year! For crying out loud...Where is all the traffic?!

If you're new or relatively new to Internet marketing, Traffic, or lack thereof, is certainly one of the most frustrating challenges you face in building your business. I'll be the first to tell you that I'm no traffic expert. The ability to generate traffic of the amount I want and need on a consistent basis is still a continual challenge for me. If and when I do become a traffic expert, I'll be sure to let you know.

One of the things that I find a bit frustrating and even somewhat irritating is when those who have become experts on traffic generation or whose websites enjoy an abundance of traffic, try to tell the rest of us that getting traffic really is very simple. It's not. If it were, a whole lot more people would be making money. Of course getting traffic is simple once you've established your business and developed a recognized brand. But when you're in the midst of building a business, the issue of getting traffic to your website is a hard nut to crack.

So often, those who are successful “traffic generators” will throw out some old, dry bones, but will never tell you the real story. Very few people will come right out and tell you that there is really no way to develop targeted traffic (and that's the only kind that matters) easily or quickly, short of a couple of strategies. I've often talked about the need to have your own website, regardless of your preferred method to make money online. Having a web presence will only help you become more professional, knowledgeable, and proficient. Just as important as having your own website however, is the need to run a maintenance check on it.
